Handmade is best... learn to knit, crochet, etcetera
With the advent of the internet and so many websites devoted to crafts, isn't it a shame that so many young parents have missed out on learning to do what could be termed 'old-fashioned' skills? There are many books available secondhand and really cheap on Amazon, many helpful websites, and so much assistance available that it is really easy to get supplies and information to start at least one new craft really inexpensively. Learn yourself, then you can teach your children, or grandchildren. Once you have started your confidence will grow exponentially! And there are so many new kinds of wools available now which give fabulous textures and 'grow' really quickly. If the thought of loads of stiches on knitting needles and the fear of dropping a stitch puts you off, why not try crochet... there's only one stitch to drop! Besides knitting, crochet, you could also consider sewing, embroidery, and smocking... and there is always tatting to add to this list [though I have never managed to master that entirely myself!]... just find a craft you think you'll enjoy, get a book and try. If you don't succeed at first you could always try to find someone to help you with your first efforts. Once you are proficient, you can begin to make your own items, or alter ready-made items, to come up with one of a kind goods. With todays mass market fashion, your wardrobe could receive a boost with individual one-off handmade and 'special to you' items. |
